Abstract

Esai ini mengkaji Revolusi Prancis bukan sekadar sebagai peristiwa sejarah biasa, melainkan sebagai sebuah laboratorium filosofis tempat ide-ide besar abad Pencerahan diuji langsung melalui realitas politik yang ekstrem. Gerakan yang awalnya lahir dari cita-cita mulia emansipasi manusia untuk meruntuhkan monarki absolut pada tahun 1789 ini mengalami paradoks besar ketika bertransformasi menjadi sistem kekerasan massal yang sistematis melalui periode La Terreur (Masa Teror) di bawah kendali Maximilien Robespierre dan kaum Jacobin. Tulisan ini melacak akar intelektual revolusi melalui pemikiran Jean-Jacques Rousseau mengenai volonté générale (kehendak umum) yang membalik basis kedaulatan politik, John Locke mengenai perlindungan hak alamiah manusia, dan Montesquieu mengenai pemisahan kekuasaan sebagai rancangan kelembagaan. Analisis esai difokuskan pada mekanisme filosofis ketika kebebasan didefinisikan secara positif-absolut dan kehendak umum diklaim secara sepihak oleh segelintir elite, sehingga mengubah perjuangan emansipasi menjadi pemaksaan moralitas mutlak atas nama "Republik Kebajikan" yang mengorbankan kebebasan negatif warga negara.

Lebih lanjut, esai ini mengelaborasi kritik dari para filsuf pasca-revolusi, seperti Edmund Burke mengenai kebijaksanaan kolektif tradisi yang menolak rekayasa sosial utopis, analisis dialektis Hegel tentang kebebasan abstrak yang niscaya melahirkan teror, serta kritik materialis Karl Marx terkait batas-batas revolusi borjuis. Di bagian akhir, esai ini merefleksikan warisan jangka panjang revolusi dalam pembentukan sekularisme modern (laïcité), konstruksi ideologis nasionalisme, hingga relevansinya terhadap ketegangan abadi antara otoritas negara dan kebebasan individu di era kontemporer. Esai ini menyimpulkan bahwa Masa Teror bukanlah sekadar penyimpangan historis, melainkan konsekuensi logis dari absolutisme ide yang dijalankan tanpa adanya rem pembatasan institusional yang kukuh untuk menampung kompleksitas manusia yang nyata.
