Abstrak
Begadang sering dianggap sebagai kebiasaan biasa, terutama ketika seseorang sedang mengejar tugas, bekerja, bermain gawai, atau merasa masih kuat untuk tetap terjaga sampai larut malam. Padahal, tidur punya peran besar dalam menjaga kerja tubuh tetap teratur. Saat waktu tidur terus dipotong, tubuh tidak hanya mengalami rasa kantuk, tetapi juga kehilangan kesempatan untuk memulihkan otak, menata ulang hormon, menjaga tekanan darah, mengatur gula darah, memperkuat sistem imun, dan menstabilkan emosi. Kajian ini membahas dampak begadang dari sudut pandang biologis dan medis dengan menyoroti berbagai sistem tubuh yang ikut terganggu ketika kurang tidur terjadi berulang. Pada otak, begadang dapat menurunkan fokus, memperlambat reaksi, mengganggu daya ingat, dan membuat seseorang lebih mudah mengambil keputusan buruk. Pada sistem hormon dan metabolisme, kurang tidur dapat mengubah rasa lapar, meningkatkan keinginan makan makanan tinggi kalori, serta membuat pengaturan glukosa dan insulin menjadi kurang stabil. Pada jantung dan pembuluh darah, tidur yang kurang dapat membuat tubuh terlalu lama berada dalam kondisi siaga sehingga tekanan darah dan beban kerja jantung meningkat. Sistem imun juga dapat melemah karena tubuh kehilangan waktu penting untuk mengatur respons pertahanan terhadap infeksi. Dampak lain muncul pada kesehatan mental, seperti emosi yang lebih mudah naik turun, kecemasan, suasana hati buruk, dan penurunan kemampuan mengendalikan diri. Begadang yang dilakukan sesekali mungkin masih dapat dipulihkan, tetapi begadang yang berubah menjadi pola hidup dapat memberi tekanan jangka panjang bagi tubuh. Dari pembahasan ini, tidur perlu dipahami sebagai kebutuhan biologis penting yang berhubungan langsung dengan kesehatan otak, organ, metabolisme, daya tahan tubuh, dan keseimbangan emosi.
